Computer and Video Games has posted an overview of a recent Game Informer magazine article featuring id Software's upcoming Rage. John Carmack is quoted as saying the largest market for the post apocalyptic racing shooter will be consoles, making a design focus on using controllers a necessity. The article also revealed information about the game's story and features.

According to Game Informer the shooter kicks off when the player, a lucky survivor of a devastating asteroid strike, wakes from suspended animation inside an 'ark' deep underground.

You wake to find the crew dead and databanks ruined, then stumble surface side to discover a bandit and mutant-filled wasteland living in fear of a mysterious group called 'The Authority'. Expectedly, you're out to investigate exactly who and what this group is about - and stop them.

As previously suggested Rage is a very car racing and weapon building-heavy shooter, with most of id's focus being lent to the console versions.

"The largest chunk of our market's going to be on consoles," John Carmack told the mag, revealing that its controls will be designed around controllers. "I mean, yes, you can use the mouse for it but it's critical that the controller be the way that we design the game."

They can design-for-consoles all they like--and I'm sure they're right about the market--but a joystick is NEVER going to be an acceptable control method for a first-person shooter for me. Driving with a joystick is great, but for AIMING, you want absolute control (like a mouse or trackpad), NOT relative control with auto-aim training wheels added in an attempt to compensate! A console FPS may be fun despite the bad controls, but I'll take the real thing any day. Take off the training wheels and let me do my OWN aiming, with an accurate feel.

Hopefully this means Mac/PC will have good support for gamepads though: I do like having my left hand use a gamepad instead of keyboard, while my right hand operates the mouse. I've got this working great in UT2004 and Quake Wars, but not in Quake 4 or Prey.

That this game is being developed primarily with consoles in mind should hardly come as a surprise.

As regards the Macintosh version the most recent Game Informer magazine, issue 196, had a small box on the side of their Rage article about the progress of the Mac port. The lead programmer claims that it's about a week behind but otherwise doing well. "We're treating it as a first class system. The plan was to have it up and running around in Wellspring. But it's all there. It's building and compiling. Looks good."
