Recently released for Mac OS X, Little Gods takes the familiar ball and paddle mechanics and reimagines them with two player gameplay, constantly shifting bricks, and a unique mana system for powerups. Featuring a storyline focusing on the battle between two characters to reign supreme over the other and gain god-like powers from a higher being named Pillboa, the game has something to offer for both singleplayer and multiplayer minded gamers.

The previews just keep coming for Fable: The Lost Chapters, Lionhead Studios' upcoming role playing game. This time 1UP.com decides to spice things up with some monster descriptions offered from the perspective of a hunter in the lands of Fable. The Hero Huntsmen's Monthly takes a somewhat whimsical approach to previewing the upcoming game but still manages to offer a glimpse of the terrors players may face.

For the discerning hunter, the fellow who wants to feel he's pitting himself against an equal out in the wilds I have one piece of advice: Get a new hobby! That's not what hunting's all about! You want to go and get yourself killed? Go take on a Summoner! These bad boys look tough: crackly lightning holding together plate armour, holding swords the size of a small state, pulling bolts of explosive energy out of the air. One look into their skull-faces tells you they mean business. If you want to survive a meeting with one of these, and if you can't hit the broad-side of a barn with an arrow or bolt, then get yourself nice and Berserked and go in there swinging for your life! If you're lucky, they'll fall to their knees after a while and you can run. Trophies from Summoners are rare since they kind of explode as a last insult, showering the area with pieces of skull and armour. Again, not really one for the trophy case.

Yesterday Blizzard announced a new player vs player ranking page for their popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. Players will now be able to look up rankings for their realm and faction. Updated weekly, the listing will offer a search feature as well as sorting options including name, guild, and character level.

With China's recent announcement of limiting online playing time, BBC has posted an article concerning the lives of several hard core gamers from around the world. As the title depicts, these people spend most of their day gaming and eating by their computer. Each one of the gamers interviewed gave a reason for gaming extensively, such as interaction with other players to a stress reliever. Below is a selected excerpt from the article.

Gaming helps me escape from whatever happens to be bothering me. It's a great stress reliever, a safe outlet to pursue some of my more aggressive tendencies. One of the names I use online is "Shiva" - the powerful Indian god of destruction.

But it's also really sociable.

I live in a small town and gaming is a way to interact with and meet people from all over the world. I have met players from Sweden, Australia and Korea. I've now heard a lot of opinions I would not normally have had access to. I know how people from around the world view the US.

Perhaps this is what is behind China's new rules. The average Chinese citizen might have less access to other viewpoints and cultures than I do. Perhaps the freedom of an online gaming environment is a challenge...

Gamespy recently posted a hand-on article on Myst V, the latest game from Cyan Worlds. Myst V is the finale to the popular Myst series and introduces several new gameplay mechanics such as full 3D environements and a drawing slate. From the Gamespy article:

Also in place is a traditional mouselook control scheme, allowing you to move using the WASD keys and scan the environment with the mouse, similar to any first-person shooter. There are additional options that let you move forward by pressing the mouse button, and you can even run (running in a Myst game!) using the space key. In short, it appears there's a setup for everyone, and Myst V won't suffer from the unfortunate control issues that plagued Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (the series' last foray into 3D).

But is it a change for the better? Although some of the "wow" factor of the photorealistic backgrounds has been removed, Myst V's graphics are still extremely impressive. It doesn't have the same super-dramatic lighting effects of games like DOOM 3 or F.E.A.R., but it does boast some extremely pretty environments (the water effects are a standout), and the few characters you meet are meticulously crafted, from motion-capped animations to highly detailed and expressive faces matched only by Half-Life 2. Cyan undoubtedly knew that many Myst fans would be apprehensive with the switch, but it seems they've met the challenge of living up to the series' outstanding visuals.

In a recent review Applelinks analyzed Star Wars Battlefront, the Lucasarts first person shooter set in the Star Wars universe. Pleasing graphics and the ability to participate in nearly every famous battle from the films wasn't enough to elevate Battlefront beyond a three out of five rating.

From the review:

The single player version plays like the multiplayer, meaning that when you die, you simply re-spawn and hop back into the fray, either as the same soldier or a different type. This is fine for multiplayer gaming where you wouldn't want to sit out of a game waiting for a battle to finish before you could play again, but it makes your role in the single player version pretty pointless. No point in working hard to develop a great strategy when I can just correct after dying. This didn't bother me in Unreal Tournament or Quake III: Arena, but because it's Star Wars, I know there's a story going on around me, and it bugged me that I couldn't follow that. The Historical Campaigns do tie the battle scenes together with clips from the movies, but all they do is make you feel like you're watching a movie, not living it.
