Now, what adventure game would be complete without mind-bending puzzles? Puzzles in Escape from Monkey Island™ are fun and challenging, most involving the collection of objects for use with people or the surrounding environment. My personal favorite puzzle involves a beautiful, but hysterically surly lady in a frilly pink dress. There is something magical about a dainty woman spitting insults at me. In fact, Escape from Monkey Island™ is one of the funniest games I’ve ever played. Guybrush Threepwood is a delightful, oxymoronic game hero. He’s a polite, well-groomed, vile, mighty pirate. At least, he wishes he were vile & mighty. Almost every single character interaction made me at least chuckle. In today’s market, most games are fairly dark & violent, thus a satirical comedy like Escape from Monkey Island™ is most refreshing. Don’t get me wrong, I always enjoy spilling the blood of my enemies, but laughter is nice too. Graphics: That’s the Second Prettiest 2D Background I’ve Ever Seen! Escape from Monkey Island’s™ use of beautifully rendered 2D backgrounds with OpenGL 3D models is superb. The 2D land & cityscapes give the game a whimsically cartoonish look, while the 3D models keep it modern & on par with today’s technology. Thanks to the use of OpenGL candles and campfires cast accurate light & shadows on 3D objects, thus creating the perfect mood for any setting. Color is as also used quite well in Escape from Monkey Island™. Bustling towns are brightly colored and filled with decorative statues & fountains with clear blue water, while areas such as the Mists O’ Time Marsh are dark & brooding. The most unsettlingly majestic area in this visually stunning game is the dreaded Monkey Island™. There’s something upsetting about thousands of monkeys plotting & scheming in an organized society… Anywho, enough about my odd monkey paranoia. The game characters are a tad jaggy around the edges, therefore a video card supporting FSAA would be helpful. Escape from Monkey Island™ ran nicely on my G4/350 & Titanium PowerBook without any bugs, hiccups or glitches.
